Dear Parents of Hayes Wrestlers-

Please help to make sure all of your son's practice and competition gear gets a wash nightly and that he continues to bring clean towel to shower with and clothes to change into after practice.  It is a good idea to wash his bedding and jacket/sweatshirt he's been wearing this winter as well.  Please do this even if your son is showing no sign.

Note: wrestling shoes and kneepads can be washed in the washing machine with normal detergent and then set atop the dryer, while the other clothes are being dried, with the laces loosened and dry newspaper stuffed into them for quicker drying.

As I stated in our parent meeting, as unfortunate as it is, if a guy wrestles long enough, he is almost certain to, at some time, catch one of these skin diseases from somewhere or some other wrestler, which, if handled promptly (which means identifying it and treating it), are pretty much negligible...it's when they get ignored that problems occur.  The best thing we can do is to be as proactive as possible, to protect ourselves as best we can, and to try to identify and treat any suspicious spots on the body as soon as possible.

If you are curious of some of these diseases that wrestlers are succeptable to, click on the links below to learn more.  Please note that the best precautions for all of these are to

1. Wash hands thoroughly and frequently

2.  Make sure workout equipment gets wiped down prior to and after use

3.  Maintain a healthy diet, get adequate sleep, and stay hydrated (as that infection spreads easier with a compromised immune system)

4.  Do not share personal hygeine items such as stick deodorants, hair brushes, combs, razors, toothbrushes, and towels

5.  Clean workout clothes and bedding regularly

6.  Shower after workouts

Ringworm

Impetigo

Staph Infection

MRSA

Scabies

Poision Oak, Poison Ivy, and Posion Sumac

Please feel free to email me back or call me with any questions or concerns.  Other than all this, being educated about these diseases is what helps most.
